O'Neil, who was in her high-school year during the auditions, auditioned in the 3rd season of Canadian Idol within the early months of 2005. She made it to the top tier of contestants following the judges' praise for her singing ability. O'Neil received high praise from the jury. However, she was a major loser in the Top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. Judges were shocked by this and advised the viewers to select contestants such as Melissa with most impressive singing talent. O'Neil's performance was so consistent that he didn't fall in the bottom 3. She was the judge.
